RUSSEL MURRAY | Of Counsel

O. Russel Murray

Russel has represented clients in commercial transactions in over 35 states and half a dozen foreign countries. Russel began his career as a Trial Attorney in the Foreign Commerce Section, Antitrust Division, of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where he also worked for a time as a Special Assistant United States Attorney. He returned to Denver to join a large regional law firm, where he began his transition from litigator to oil & gas attorney, before forming his own firm. Since then, he has represented small businesses ranging from oil & gas exploration and development companies, to commercial real estate developers, to steel fabricators, to engineering and architecture firms, to a vineyard and winery in Oregon, and to just about every other type of small business venture.

His first work-out involved restructuring a loan with Penn Square Bank in the middle of its notorious failure in 1984 that lead directly to the collapse of Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust—still one of the largest bank failures in history—truly a baptism by fire. Other transactions have included representation of the project developer in financing and constructing an gas-fueled electric power generation facility in Peru, oil & gas partnership roll-ups and liquidations in several states, financing and securitization of gas pipelines in Texas, Utah and the Southwest, representation of a large utility company in natural resource acquisitions, and over a billion dollars in transactions and financings in a variety of industries, many in oil & gas and mostly in the range of $10-20 million at a time.

Admissions & Memberships

Russel was admitted to the State Bar of Colorado in 1980 (active), the State Bar of California in 1977(inactive), and the Bar for the District of Columbia in 1979 (inactive).

Education

Russel received his B.S. in Business from the University of Colorado back when “calculator” meant an abacus. He graduated law school in 1977 from Northwestern University (1977).

Russel has published articles for numerous bar journals, which include The Mediation Handbook: Effective Strategies for Litigators (Bradford Publishing (220 pgs.), 2006, and Revised Edition 2010).
